Essential Fatty Acids: - the Missing Link to Better Health The human body cannot function without two important polyunsaturated fats - linoleic and (alpha)-linolenic acid. These are referred to as essential fatty acids because they are totally necessary for cell structure and function. Many of the benefits associated with a diet high in fruits, nuts and vegetables is due to the relatively higher levels of essential fatty acids found in these foods. Both these essential fatty acids form hormone like substances known as prostaglandins. Linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) and -linolenic acid (an omega -3 fatty acid) form entirely different prostaglandins practitioners are finding that if you manipulate the types of dietary fatty acids you can dramatically effect how the body functions and in some cases, even treat disease. Unlike medications that interfere with prostaglandins, for example NSAID'S, omega-3 fatty acids naturally temper the inflammatory prostaglandins resulting in a decrease in joint swelling and pain. Beyond this effect of regulating prostaglandins , omega -3 oils improve the functioning of the immune system and are therefore helpful in all auto-immune conditions.
Flaxseed oil (Linum usitatissimum) is the highest plant source of a-linolenic acid (ALA) as well as being the most abundant source of lignans, special compounds that are known for their benefits in reducing menopausal hot flushes. They are also anti-cancer, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. Flaxseed oil supplies the body with ALA, an omega-3 essential fatty acid, which is known for its effects on blood pressure, its regulation of triglycerides and cholesterol, and its artery cleaning effects.
